History of Homeopathy

The word homeopathy comes from the Greek homeo (meaning similar) and pathos (meaning suffering). Homeopathy was first defined by the German practitioner Dr. Samuel Hahnemann and the origins of Homeopathy can be traced back to the times of Hypocrates. Through much observation and research Dr. Hahnemann found that symptoms of a poisoning could be cured by homeopathically administering the poisonous substance – like cures like.

Dr. Hahnemann began to use Homeopathy because he was discouraged with how conventional medicine was treating its patients at the time - bloodletting, purging, leeches and the use of toxic chemicals in their crude form. These processes were only weakening the patients system rather then returning them to a state of health.

After further research on how like can cure like Dr. Hahnemann introduced the concept of potentization, changing the strength of a remedy. With this and the totality of symptoms presented by the patient he was able to successfully treat his patients homeopathically. Dr. Hahnemann practiced Homeopathy for 50 years until his death in 1843.
